Title IX
Enacted in 1972, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 (“Title IX”) is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education programs and activities. Title IX states: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial aid.” Providing an environment free from sex discrimination is of the highest priority for Elmhurst University (the University). All students, employees, and applicants are protected under Title IX.
Sexual assault, stalking, dating violence, domestic violence, quid pro quo harassment, and hostile environment harassment are all considered forms of sex discrimination, and are prohibited at the University. Preventing and remedying these forms of misconduct is a campus-wide responsibility, led by the University’s Title IX Office. The Title IX Office oversees the implementation and enforcement of the appropriate policy requirements in the University’s Non-Discrimination and Non-Harassment Policy, located here: elmhurst.edu/titleix. This policy provides extensive guidance on Title IX reporting, investigation procedures and institutional requirements. In addition, the University is deeply committed to eliminating sex discrimination through training and educational programs. The Title IX Office works closely with campus and community partners to strengthen our prevention and response efforts.
In addition to Title IX, Elmhurst University complies with all related federal, state, and local laws addressing sex discrimination and sexual violence, including the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, and the Illinois Preventing Violence in Higher Education Act. Any inquiries regarding Title IX should be directed to the University’s Title IX Coordinator, who is trained in trauma-informed responses to sex discrimination. The Title IX Coordinator may be contacted at titleix@elmhurst.edu.
